Mobile Air Quality Monitoring System Using City Government Vehicles

Working with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), TDE set out to demonstrate that fleet vehicles can act as reliable air quality sensing platforms with little driver support. TDE designed, constructed, deployed, and maintained two easy-to-install mobile sensing systems. These magnetic, roof-mounted instrument packages measured PM2.5, black carbon, wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and relative humidity.

The units were self-contained, battery operated, and used real-time communication systems. They utilized TDE’s data management and quality assurance system to ensure consistent high data capture and quality.

As cities and countries around the globe continue to expand their monitoring networks, mobile sensing systems enable mapping air quality at the hyperlocal level. Contact us if you want to deploy mobile or other types of air monitoring in your city.
